چکیده

Networks are known to be prone to link failures. In this paper we set out to investigate how networks of varying connectivity patterns respond to different link failure schemes in terms of connectivity, clustering coefficient and shortest path lengths. We then propose a measure, which we call the vulnerability of a network, for evaluating the extent of the damage these failures can cause. Accepting the disconnections of node pairs as a damage indicator, vulnerability simply represents how quickly the failure of the critical links cause the network to undergo a specified damage extent. Analyzing the vulnerabilities under varying damage specifications shows that scale free networks are relatively more vulnerable for small failures, but more efficient; whereas Erdös-Rényi networks are the least vulnerable despite lacking any clustered structure.

Evaluating Multipath TCP Resilience against Link Failures

Standard TCP is the de facto reliable transfer protocol for the Internet. It is designed to establish a reliable connection using only a single network interface. However, standard TCP with single interfacing performs poorly due to intermittent node connectivity. This requires the re-establishment of connections as the IP addresses change. Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) has emerged to utilize multiple ...

VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT OF WATER DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS: GRAPH THEORY METHOD

The main functional purpose of a water distribution network is to transport water from a source to several domestic and industrial units while at the same time satisfying various requirements on hydraulic response. All the water distribution networks perform two basic operations: firstly the water network needs to deliver adequate amounts of water to meet specific requirements, and secondly the...

A Survey On the Vulnerability Parameters of Networks

The analysis of vulnerability in networks generally involves some questions about how the underlying graph is connected. One is naturally interested in studying the types of disruption in the network that maybe caused by failures of certain links or nodes. In terms of a graph, the concept of connectedness is used in dierent forms to study many of the measures of vulnerability. When certain vert...

A Multi Objective Graph Based Model for Analyzing Survivability of Vulnerable Networks

In the various fields of disaster management, choosing the best location for the Emergency Support & Supply Service Centers (ESSSCs) and the survivability of the network that provides the links between ESSSCs and their environment has a great role to be paid enough attention. This paper introduces a graph based model to measure the survivability of the linking's network. By values computed for ...

Bound and exact methods for assessing link vulnerability in complex networks

Assessing network systems for failures is critical to mitigate the risk and develop proactive responses. In this paper, we investigate devastating consequences of link failures in networks. We propose an exact algorithm and a spectral lowerbound on the minimum number of removed links to incur a significant level of disruption. Our exact solution can identify optimal solutions in both uniform an...
